City Lights

From the music and magic of Gershwin to the ins and outs of the First Amendment, some of Penn State’s faculty stars will hit the road in early 2008 to present a series of City Lights cultural and educational events. These City Lights events are sponsored by the Penn State Alumni Association, in cooperation with Penn State’s colleges and alumni groups, and are designed to engage alumni and friends where they live and work.

All City Lights events require pre-registration, with discounted fees for Alumni Association members, their friends, and guests. For more information, call 800-548-LION (5466), option 5, option 1. Membership in the Penn State Alumni Association is not required to attend these events.

Pittsburgh—Heinz Hall

Valentine's Day Concert
Celebrate the romance of the season with a concert: Love is Here to Stay: the Romantic Songs of George Gershwin, conducted by Marvin Hamlisch, principal pops conductor with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony. Hamlisch has been recognized with three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony, and three Golden Globe awards throughout his long career in music. Prior to the 7:30 p.m. performance, join fellow Penn Staters at a reception that will include a wide array of hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, and a special program by Penn State Music Education Professor and Blue Band Director O. Richard Bundy. Dr. Bundy will briefly discuss the life, times, and music of Gershwin, a legendary composer of both Broadway and concert music. Tickets are $65 for Alumni Association members; $75 for non-members. Register now.

New York City—The Princeton Club of New York

Penn State Broadway Connections
Penn State Broadway Connections will feature President Graham Spanier and a look behind the scenes at Penn State’s extraordinary Musical Theatre Program and its reputation as “the door to the stage” by Cary Libkin, head of the Musical Theatre Program. This special evening includes a reception with other New York-area Penn Staters at The Princeton Club in midtown Manhattan. The reception could serve as a light dinner. Alumni Association members $50; non-members $60. Register now.

Make a weekend of it by joining Penn Staters at the Saturday matinee performance of the award-winning Hairspray at the Neil Simon Theatre on Saturday, March 1. Orchestra-section tickets normally priced at $110 are available to our group for $65 each. Tickets are limited and must be ordered when you register online for the Friday night reception at The Princeton Club.

Philadelphia—National Constitution Center

We Are ... The People
We Are … The People will feature Clay Calvert, the John and Ann Curley Professor of First Amendment Studies, professor of communications and law, and co-director of the Pennsylvania Center for the First Amendment. Dr. Calvert will discuss freedom of speech and of the press, while examining the “culture wars” as government tries to police language and violence in media. The evening will begin with a get-acquainted reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres, or come early to enjoy the National Constitution Center on your own, with its interactive and multimedia exhibits where you can become a member of the Supreme Court, take the oath of office, and more. The National Constitution Center is located in historic Philadelphia, just two blocks from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. There will be reserved paid parking for Penn Staters. Penn State On Location: Inside the Philly Movie Scene Experience the movie industry—Penn State style—at On Location: Inside the Philly Movie Scene. Get the scoop on the movie biz from Charles Dumas, a Penn State faculty member, and actor. This memorable day will give you the inside story on why Philadelphia is one of the top locations in the world for making movies. An optional tour will visit a number of Philadelphia movie locations where films such as National Treasure, The Sixth Sense, Rocky, and Trading Places were shot. Alumni Association members, $10 each; non-members, $15. More.

Be a Doctor for a Day
You and your family can Be a Doctor for a Day at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. No tests, student loans, or malpractice insurance required. See the cutting-edge technology used to train physicians, and try your skills on lifelike patient simulators. Scrub up and participate in a simulated surgery. Slide into the cockpit of Life Lion and feel the excitement of responding to medical emergencies. Peer through a microscope and learn about the latest developments in stem cell research. A light lunch is included in your registration. Continue your evening by purchasing optional tickets to nearby Hershey Park. Alumni Association, their guests and their children, 6 and older, are $15 each; non-members, their guests and their children, 6 and older, are $25 each. Spring into Summer
The entire family can Spring into Summer with other Penn Staters at this fun-filled day. The day will include participatory activities led by Penn State Kinesiology Professor Bob Ricketts as well as presentations that will tune up your career and your body. Play a game of mini-golf, go bowling, or take advantage of the many other indoor and outdoor recreational activities. Career Specialists will help you refresh your career during optional workshops, networking activities, and individual consultations. Alumni Association members and their children 3–12 years old, $25 adults and $15 children; non-members, $35 adults and $20 children. Price includes lunch, ice-cream social, and one indoor activity.
