Ten Alumni Elected, Three Appointed to Serve on Penn State Alumni Association’s Governing Board
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (June 7, 2010)—From a human resources manager from Chicago to an aerospace engineer from Virginia to a Philadelphia lawyer, 10 Penn State alumni have been elected in the recent election and three appointed to Alumni Council, the governing body of the Penn State Alumni Association.
Elected to Alumni Council for three-year terms from July 1, 2010–June 30, 2013 are Sally Hornick Anderson, Chicago; Katie Bartoo, Orlando, Fla.; Kenneth R. Haas Jr., Outer Banks, N.C.; Susan Ingham Martin, York, Pa.; Joan M. McLane, Mission Viejo, Calif.;Susan M. McNulty-Atwater, Barker, N.Y.; Johanna Ramos, Herndon, Va.; Richard D. Randall, York, Pa.; Kevin R. Steele, Wynnewood, Pa.; and Laurie B. Williams, Bowie, Md.
Alumni Association President Barry M. Simpson filled three appointed positions on Alumni Council. The appointees are Kenneth D. Henderson, Harrisburg, Pa.; Alan R. Gedrich, Philadelphia; andPatricia (Trish) A. Lawlor, Horsham, Pa.
Alumni Council is an all-volunteer governing body that guides and directs policy for the Penn State Alumni Association. The council determines strategies and programs to be carried out by the Alumni Association staff and is also responsible for electing the Alumni Association president and vice president.
In this year’s election, 15,249 Alumni Association members cast ballots—an 11.5 percent participation rate among eligible voters—with more than 59 percent submitting their ballots online. Next year in 2011, all election ballot distribution and voting will be done online.
Following is a brief biography about each newly named Alumni Council member:
Sally Hornick Anderson, Chicago; A past president of the Greater Chicago Chapter, Anderson is the 2005 Recent Alumna Award recipient and received the 2002 Penn State Hotel and Restaurant Society’s Emerging Professional Award. She graduated from the College of Health and Human Development in 1998 and is human resources manager for Google, Inc.
Katie Bartoo, Orlando, Fla.; A 1992 graduate of the College of the Liberal Arts, Bartoo is the senior construction litigation paralegal for Broad and Cassel law firm. She has served as the president of the Central Florida Chapter for more than 11 years.
Alan R. Gedrich, Philadelphia; A 1982 graduate of the Smeal College of Business and is a partner of Stradley, Ronan, Stevens & Young, LLP law firm. Gedrich has been appointed to a second term on Alumni Council. Previously, he served as chair of the Alumni Council Budget & Finance Committee, as a member of the Investment Subcommittee and on Executive Board.
Kenneth R. Haas Jr., Outer Banks, N.C.; Haas is a 1980 graduate of the College of the Liberal Arts and a pilot for Delta Airlines. He is new to Alumni Council.
Kenneth D. Henderson, Harrisburg, Pa.; Appointed to a second term on Alumni Council, Henderson previously served as a member of the Executive Board, Budget & Finance Committee, and Nominating Committee. Henderson is a 1971 Smeal College of Business graduate and is deputy chief counsel for the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.
Patricia (Trish) A. Lawlor, Horsham, Pa.; A 1978 graduate of the Smeal College of Business, Lawlor is senior family housing specialist for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is Lawlor’s second term on Alumni Council. Previously, she served as vice chair of the Diversity Committee and was a member of the Awards Committee.
Susan Ingham Martin, York, Pa.; Martin has two Penn State degrees, a 1968 bachelor’s and a 1994 master’s from the College of Education. She is a retired reading specialist/Title I facilitator in the Lancaster School District and serves on the College of Education Alumni Society Board. Martin has also served on the Penn State York Alumni Society Board and as an alumni admissions volunteer.
Joan M. McLane, Mission Viejo, Calif.; McLane is a past president of the Orange County Chapter and is the immediate past president of the Big Ten Club of Southern California, the first Penn Stater to do so. She graduated in 1994 from the College of the Liberal Arts and is chief operations officer of the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Care at the University of California, Irvine.
Susan M. McNulty-Atwater, Barker, N.Y.; McNulty-Atwater has been an active member for ten years of the College of Engineering Alumni Society Board and currently serves as president. During her term on Alumni Council, she was a member of the Program Development Committee. McNulty-Atwater graduated from the College of Engineering in 1999 and is a senior process engineer in the Research and Development arm of Rich Products Corporation.
Johanna Ramos, Herndon, Va.; A two-time graduate of the College of Engineering in 1992 and in 1999, Ramos is a senior aerospace engineer for Scitor Corporation. She is a past Alumni Council member, serving on the Executive Board as well as chairing the Diversity Committee. Ramos currently serves as a FastStart mentor, Penn State Admissions volunteer, and as a member of the College of Engineering Advisory Board for Engineering Diversity.
Richard D. Randall, York, Pa.; Randall is a 1971 graduate of the College of Engineering and is president of New Level Advisors, LLC. Randall has been elected to a second term on Alumni Council, previously serving on the Program Development Committee.
Kevin R. Steele, Wynnewood, Pa.; Steele is first district attorney for the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. He has been elected to a second term on Alumni Council where he most recently served as vice chair of the Grassroots Network Committee. A 1992 graduate from the Penn State Dickinson School of Law, he is a past president of the Penn State Graduate School Alumni Society.
Laurie B. Williams, Bowie, Md.; Williams has been re-elected to a second term on Alumni Council where she most recently served as a member of the Diversity Committee, Membership Committee, and the Margin of Excellence Committee. She is a 1990 graduate of the College of Agricultural Sciences and is a consumer safety officer of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.
