Ten Alumni Elected, Three Appointed to Serve on Penn State Alumni Association’s Governing Board

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (June 13, 2011)—From an Arizona-based neonatologist to a Second Mile executive from Boalsburg, Pa., to an advertising executive from Puerto Rico, 10 Penn State alumni have been elected and three appointed to Alumni Council, the governing body of the Penn State Alumni Association.

Elected to Alumni Council for three-year terms from July 1, 2011–June 30, 2014, are Alan D. Bedrick, Tucson, Ariz.; Martin R. Cepeda Jr., Conshohocken, Pa.; Dave Dell, Strasburg, Pa.; Ronald H. Frear, State College, Pa.; Katherine E. Genovese, Boalsburg, Pa.; Lisa Todd Hart, Pittsburgh; Kathleen G. Hume, South Coventry, Pa.; Heather James, Montclair, N.J.; Robert C. Landis, Alexandria, Va.; and Heather L. Rayle, Shavertown, Pa.

Alumni Association incoming President Kathleen Arnold Smarilli filled three appointed positions on Alumni Council. The appointees are Gregory N. Malone, South Windsor, Conn.; Ivan E. Santos, San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Katie L. Wells, Allentown, Pa.   

Alumni Council is an all-volunteer governing body that guides and directs policy for the Penn State Alumni Association. The council determines strategies and programs to be carried out by the Alumni Association staff and is also responsible for electing the Alumni Association president and vice president. This year, the Alumni Council election went “green” and for the first time was held entirely online. Nearly 9,000 alumni members voted.

Following is a brief biography about each newly named Alumni Council member:

Alan D. Bedrick, Tucson, Ariz.; A 1974 graduate of Eberly College of Science and a 1978 graduate of the Penn State College of Medicine, Bedrick is chief of the neonatology section at the University of Arizona Medical Center. This is his second elected term on Alumni Council. Previously, he served as a member of the Communications Committee. He received the Alumni Fellow Award in 1993 and the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2007.

Martin R. Cepeda Jr., Conshohocken, Pa.; A 2005 graduate of the Smeal College of Business, Cepeda is the senior university recruiter for Johnson & Johnson. He is president of the Montgomery County Chapter and a member of the Penn State Abington Alumni Society Board. This is his first elected term on Alumni Council.

Dave Dell, Strasburg, Pa.; A 1976 graduate of the College of Agricultural Sciences, Dell serves on the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences Alumni Society Board and the Penn State Ag Council. This is his first elected term on Alumni Council.

Ronald H. Frear, State College, Pa.; A 1954 graduate of the Smeal College of Business, Frear is retired from the Kimberly-Clark Corporation. This is his second elected term on Alumni Council. Previously, he served as a member of the Budget & Finance Committee.

Katherine E. Genovese, Boalsburg, Pa.; A 1978 graduate of the College of the Liberal Arts and a 1984 graduate of the College of Education, Genovese is the executive vice president of The Second Mile. This is her second elected term on Alumni Council. Previously, she served as a member of the Membership Committee.

Lisa Todd Hart, Pittsburgh; A 1997 College of Engineering graduate, Hart is vice president of commercial real estate finance for RBS Citizens Bank. She previously served on Alumni Council as president of the Schreyer Honors College Alumni Society and served on the Budget & Finance Committee. This is her first elected term.

Kathleen G. Hume, South Coventry, Pa.; A 1996 graduate, Hume is director of practice development for Reading-Berks Physical Therapy. She serves on the Penn State Great Valley Alumni Society Board. This is her first elected term on Alumni Council.

Heather James, Upper Montclair, N.J.; A 1992 graduate of the Smeal College of Business, James is senior vice president and chief marketing officer for the Advertising Research Foundation. This is her second elected term on Alumni Council. Previously, she served on Executive Board, chaired the Diversity Committee, and was a member of the Membership Committee.

Robert C. Landis, Alexandria, Va.; A 1963 graduate of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, Landis is a retired meteorologist/oceanographer. This is his second elected term on Alumni Council. Previously, he served on Executive Board and chaired the Awards Committee.

Gregory N. Malone, South Windsor, Conn.; A 1995 graduate of the Smeal College of Business, Malone is the actuarial director for CIGNA. He is president of the Connecticut Valley Chapter, and this is his first term on Alumni Council.

Heather L. Rayle, Shavertown, Pa.; A 1989 graduate of the Eberly College of Science, Rayle is vice president and general manager of advanced optics for SCHOTT North America. This is her first elected term. Rayle previously served on Alumni Council as president of the Eberly College of Science Alumni Society and was a member of the Communications Committee.

Ivan E. Santos, San Juan, Puerto Rico; A 1990 graduate of the Smeal College of Business, Santos is the general manager of Young & Rubicam/Puerto Rico. Santos is a board member for the Puerto Rico Chapter. This is his first term on Alumni Council.

Katie L. Wells, Allentown, Pa.; A 2003 graduate of Penn State Berks, Wells is a client relations coordinator for NothelferMorrone Financial Strategies. This is her first elected term on Alumni Council. She previously served on Council as president of the Penn State Lehigh Valley Alumni Society and was a member of the Volunteer Support Committee.
