Pacific Northwest and California with Faculty Host Carolyn Mahan

July 13–20 2009

Take in the majesty of the Pacific Northwest on this eight-day excursion—from the site of the volcanic eruption at Mount St. Helens to the man-made wonder of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Other sights include the Oregon coast, Oregon Trail, California’s coastal redwoods, and abundant wildlife.

Carolyn Mahan ’92g, ’96g is an associate professor of biology at Penn State Altoona, where she studies biodiversity and the effects of human-modified landscapes on wildlife. Mahan has previously worked in the Pacific Northwest and is an excellent resource on the natural history of the area.

Trip highlights:

  • Rogue River cruise in Oregon’s rugged wilderness;
  • Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and California’s Redwood National Park;
  • Bonneville Dam tour with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park ranger;
  • Historic fishing and timber center Eureka, Calif.
