Founded in 1945 under director Eric Walker, it succeeded Harvard University's underwater
sound lab as the Navy's principal academic center for basic research in underwater
weaponry. It was part of a postwar policy to bolster national defense through scientific research.
The ARL's work also had important peacetime applications in acoustics,
hydrodynamics, and electric circuitry.
