The Penn Stater magazine

The first version of what would become The Penn Stater magazine, Penn State’s most visible publication, lasted but four years. The Alumni Quarterly debuted in 1910 but was renamed Penn State Alumni News and started publishing bimonthly by 1914. The four–page Alumni News featured no photos and was mailed to “all graduates and former students of the College who pay the annual membership fee of $2.00.” In return, alumni received updates on campus happenings—bonfires after athletic victories were banned as too dangerous—and listings of weekly alumni luncheons, then held in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. By 1915, black & white photos documenting reunions were regularly included.

By 1961, Penn State Alumni News had grown to a magazine format of 32 pages with numerous photos, though still in black & white. The October 1961 issue included an aerial shot of Chambers Building under construction and the new East Halls dormitories located near the flower gardens, now site of the law school’s Katz Building. The magazine, then as now, was filled with features on Penn State students and alumni and campus news.

John Black ’62 was the editor who renamed the magazine The Penn Stater in 1972, and in the decades since it has grown to a colorful 80- to 96–page magazine with award–winning feature writing, photography, and design. Since 1996, current editor Tina Hay ’83 has guided the magazine to hundreds of awards including being named the 2007 Robert Sibley Magazine of the Year.

Between issues, Penn Staters can read previews of upcoming stories and other Penn State–related news at The Penn Stater blog or on Facebook.

The Penn Stater welcomes news of weddings, births, and other significant milestones for use in the "Class Notes" section. To submit a Class Note item, e-mail pennstater@psu.edu. Letters to the Editor can also be submitted by e-mailing pennstater@psu.edu.

The Football Letter

For more than 80 years, The Football Letter has covered Nittany Lion football from its one-of-a-kind perspective. Ridge Riley ’32 originated the letter in 1938 to give Penn Staters a unique, alum-to-alum account of each football game. And Editor John Black ’62 has carried on that tradition since 1976, providing weekly perspective, historical context, and memorable moments as part of this benefit of Alumni Association membership.

Today, members receive The Football Letter in their email inboxes each Monday morning during the season—complete with game story, insights, stats, full-color game photos from award-winning photographer Steve Manuel ’84 ’92g, details about Alumni Association news and events, links to other Penn State sports, and more.

AlumnInsider

AlumnInsider, the Alumni Association’s monthly e–newsletter, keeps members updated on Penn State news, Alumni Association events, and other University happenings. Launched in 2004 as Alumni Volunteer Update, this e–publication first targeted chapter leaders and members. Three years later it was renamed AlumnInsider and offered as an Alumni Association member benefit. Today, more than 110,000 Penn State alumni and friends receive a monthly update on all things Penn State—delivered conveniently to their email inboxes.

AlumnInsider updates readers on traditional Penn State favorites with stories and photo scrapbooks of perennial events like THON, Homecoming, and Arts Festival. Some of AlumnInsider’s most popular stories are historical “snapshots” of particular times or events featured in the “History and Traditions” section. Many of these stories inspire readers to email us with memories of their own Penn State experience.

AlumnInsider is one of many benefits of membership in the Penn State Alumni Association. To join or renew your membership, click here. Want to suggest a story idea or respond to an AlumnInsider story? Email alumninsider@psu.edu.
